Myth 1: As long as the key phrases are in the Meta tags, the search engines will rank us well

As long as the key phrases are in the Meta tags, the search engines will rank us well

Google has never taken any notice of meta keywords, due to widespread abuse of keywords during the late ’90s making them pointless for ranking a page. They do use the meta description as a snippet of the page in the search results if they cannot find the right text on the page to extract as a snippet, but if your key phrase only appears in the meta description it’s not going to make your page come up anywhere sensible in the search results.

If you want to get found for a phrase, having it in the visible copy on your page is the best first step. If you can’t see it, don’t expect to get found for it.
